Urban Commuters Drive Growth in Scooter Segment as Total Motorcycle Sales Dip
0
In a notable trend within the Australian motorcycle market, scooter sales have risen by 4.6% in the first nine months of 2025, even as the overall market experienced a 2.2% decline, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
Between January and September, a total of 63,988 motorcycles were sold across all categories, with scooters now accounting for 5.7% of total sales. This growth is largely driven by urban commuters seeking cost-effective and efficient transportation solutions.
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber highlighted that the renewed interest in scooters reflects changing urban travel habits, as they offer a practical and economical option for short trips and navigating city traffic.
While other segments, such as off-highway vehicles and road bikes, saw declines of 4.3% and 3.8% respectively, the scooter segment's growth underscores a shift towards more affordable and convenient urban mobility solutions.
Yamaha continues to lead overall sales, followed by Honda, Kawasaki, and KTM. The sustained popularity of scooters suggests that manufacturers may increasingly focus on this segment to meet the evolving needs of urban commuters.
