The Australian used car market is witnessing a notable surge in hybrid vehicle sales, reflecting a growing consumer inclination towards sustainable and practical transportation options.

According to the October 2025 Automotive Insights Report (AIR) released by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) in collaboration with AutoGrab, used hybrid car sales have more than doubled over the past two years. In October 2023, 6,868 hybrid vehicles were sold, a figure that has risen to 14,784 in October 2025. This substantial increase underscores a significant shift in consumer preferences towards vehicles that offer both environmental benefits and practical utility.

AADA CEO James Voortman highlighted that consumers are actively seeking vehicles that align with their lifestyle needs while minimizing environmental impact. Hybrid vehicles are emerging as a preferred choice, offering lower running costs and reduced emissions without compromising on convenience. This trend indicates a balanced approach by Australian consumers, who are prioritizing both sustainability and practicality in their vehicle choices.

The report also noted a 21.1% month-on-month increase in hybrid vehicle listings, suggesting a growing supply to meet the rising demand. While electric vehicle (EV) sales also experienced growth, the hybrid segment demonstrated the most pronounced increase, outpacing both petrol and diesel vehicles. This trend reflects a diverse market where buyers are carefully considering their options, with a clear inclination towards more sustainable choices.

For consumers contemplating a vehicle purchase, the expanding availability and popularity of used hybrid cars present an opportunity to invest in a vehicle that offers both economic and environmental advantages. As the market continues to evolve, it is expected that hybrid vehicles will play an increasingly prominent role in Australia's automotive landscape.
