The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has projected a potential increase in motorcycle sales across Australia, attributing this trend to the ongoing global fuel crisis.
In the first quarter of 2026, the Australian motorcycle market experienced a 7.4% growth, with 20,624 new units sold between January and March.
This uptick is particularly notable in the off-road segment, which saw a 26.7% year-on-year increase, totaling 8,737 units.
Scooter sales also rose by 7.8%, reaching 1,431 units.
Conversely, the road motorcycle segment experienced a slight decline of 3.2%, and off-highway vehicles decreased by 9.2%.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber highlighted the strong performance of off-road motorcycles and noted the potential impact of global events on future sales. He stated that while the current figures are from a period too early to reflect any impact from the conflict in the Middle East, an increase in road motorcycles and scooters as alternative forms of urban transport can be expected.

These insights suggest that as fuel prices continue to rise, more Australians may consider motorcycles and scooters as cost-effective transportation alternatives. This shift could lead to sustained growth in the motorcycle market, particularly in urban areas where fuel efficiency and maneuverability are highly valued.
