Australia’s latest interest rate pause gives borrowers a little breathing space, but it should not be mistaken for a drop in loan costs.
After months of pressure from inflation, rents, insurance, groceries and utilities, the Reserve Bank’s decision to keep the cash rate steady leaves many households and small business owners still managing repayments shaped by earlier increases.

For people considering small loans, the main message is practical: a rate hold can reduce the risk of an immediate rise in variable borrowing costs, but it does not guarantee cheaper finance. Lenders price loans using a mix of funding costs, credit risk, loan size, term, fees and each applicant’s financial profile. That means two borrowers seeking the same amount may still receive very different offers.

This is an extension of the pressure discussed after the previous interest rate rise. While home loan headlines often dominate rate coverage, smaller unsecured loans can also feel the flow-on effects through higher advertised rates, tighter assessment settings or more cautious approval decisions. Borrowers with irregular income, recent missed payments or thin credit files may notice this most.

The pause matters for small business operators too. A sole trader needing stock, repairs or short-term cash flow support may be relieved that rates have not moved higher, but the affordability test remains critical. A loan that solves today’s gap can create tomorrow’s strain if repayments collide with BAS, wages, rent or supplier bills.

Before applying, borrowers should take a measured approach:

  • Check the comparison rate, establishment fees, monthly fees and early payout costs, not only the advertised interest rate.
  • Borrow the amount needed for the purpose, rather than the maximum available.
  • Stress-test the repayment against a tighter household or business budget.
  • Avoid making multiple applications in a short period, as this may affect credit assessments.
  • Use realistic income and expense figures, especially if casual, self-employed or receiving mixed income.

A steady cash rate is welcome news, but it is not a green light to rush. The strongest position for borrowers is still preparation: know what you need, understand what it will cost, and choose repayments that remain manageable if everyday expenses keep rising.
