In 2025, Australia's truck market demonstrated remarkable resilience, achieving its third-highest annual sales despite facing significant economic pressures.
According to the Truck Industry Council (TIC), a total of 45,191 new trucks and heavy vans were sold throughout the year.
This figure, while representing an 11.9% decrease from the record 51,277 units sold in 2024, underscores the industry's robustness in the face of adversity.
The year was marked by several challenges, including rising operational costs and the closure of multiple transport operators. These closures led to an influx of late-model used trucks into the market, providing buyers with more options and potentially impacting new vehicle sales. Despite these factors, the market's performance remained strong, indicating a sustained demand for heavy vehicles across the country.
Breaking down the sales by segment, the heavy-duty category experienced a 16.7% decline, with 14,297 units sold. Kenworth led this segment with 3,347 units, followed by Volvo and Isuzu. The medium-duty segment saw an 18% drop, totaling 6,672 units, with Isuzu maintaining a dominant position. Light-duty trucks fared better, with a modest 5.8% decrease, totaling 13,712 units, and Isuzu again leading the segment.
These figures suggest a 'new normal' for the heavy vehicle industry, with consistently strong demand across all segments. The market's ability to maintain high sales volumes, even in challenging economic conditions, reflects the essential role of trucks in Australia's economy and the ongoing need for reliable transportation solutions.
